Kinesiology Alumnus Stakes Her Claim in Insurance

Victoria McFarlane (BSc ’12) wouldn’t be where she is today without her co-op work terms. The Kinesiology alumnus credits her Waterloo co-op experience and academic background for launching her career directly after she graduated, securing a role as an Accident Claims Advisor with Desjardins Insurance.

“It wasn’t a career I considered at first,” recalls Victoria. “I had my first co-op work term here at Desjardins, which turned into a second one, and part-time work on top of that.”

Her role requires her to regularly read medical reports and treatment plans to make an informed recommendation around a claim. She believes her work terms, and her knowledge of anatomy and physiology play a large part in her success on the job.

“My courses and work terms made me familiar with anatomical terms and the healing process,” she says. “My work term with the Municipality of Niagara really enhanced my problem solving skills, and another one at a physiotherapy clinic helped me with current treatment plans.”

Victoria was part of the first group of co-op students that Desjardins hired. Her work as a co-op student allowed her to transition smoothly to her full-time role, due to her familiarity with the job. The company saved both time and money on the training sessions that most new employees are required to attend.

University of Waterloo Kinesiology students are known for their well-rounded skill set and knowledge base. Many wind up working in fields that aren’t necessarily top of mind.

“Kinesiology gives us familiarity with physiology, biomechanics, anatomy, biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, and more,” Victoria says. “Those skills are transferrable to many types of organizations.”

Victoria strongly recommends hiring kinesiology co-op students to employers in all types of industries.

“Our learning is very hands-on in both the classroom and on work terms,” she explains. ”Most Kinesiology students also possess the soft skills that are essential for success in the workplace. From an employer stance, co-op terms are a great way for companies to have a four month trial with an employee. It could lead to finding their next full-time hire when they graduate.”
