Award recipients recognized at spring convocation

  • David Uponi (pictured above), from Recreation and Sport Business, was named 2019 Spring Valedictorian
  • Celia Laur, a Health Studies and Gerontology graduate student, received the Outstanding Achievement in Graduate Studies Award
  • Tasha McFarland, in Kinesiology, won the President’s Award of Excellence, which goes to the top graduating student in AHS, based on highest GPA
  • Matuiri Sithganesan, in Kinesiology, won the AHS Alumni Gold Medal, awarded to next top graduating student in AHS, based on academic achievement, contributions to the academic program, and other contributions

New scholarships

Ronald George, Florence Elizabeth and Ronald Thomas Bolce Scholarship

This award is made possible anonymously, in loving memory of Ronald George, Florence Elizabeth Bolce and in honour of Ronald Thomas Bolce.

Valued at up to $3,000, this scholarship will be awarded annually to a full-time AHS undergraduate student enrolled in first year. Recipients will be chosen based on academic excellence and extracurricular involvement, as assessed through the Admission Information Form.

In memoriam

Jay Thomson.

Jay Thomson

James A. (Jay) Thomson, professor emeritus in Waterloo’s Department of Kinesiology, passed away in October 2018. He taught generations of kinesiology students the foundations of biochemistry, human nutrition, and adaptive physiology. Thomson embraced technology and was one of the first in the Faculty to teach both online and in the classroom. He retired in 2006.

 

Donald Ranney

Donald A. Ranney, professor emeritus in Kinesiology, passed away on Sepember 9, 2019. Ranney founded the University's School of Anatomy, enabling students of human movement to gain an in-depth knowledge of the structure of the human body. He taught human anatomy for two decades, infused by a wealth of knowledge and experience as an orthopaedic surgeon abroad. Ranney retired in 1996.

Beverly Brooks

Beverly Brookes was a staff member in AHS who worked for the Centre for Applied Health Research and the Murray Alzheimer Research and Education Program (MAREP). She passed away in June at the age of 81.
