Pearl Zaki named Faculty's Co-op Student of the Year 2016

Health Studies student Pearl Zaki was selected as Applied Health Sciences’ top co-op student at the 2016 UWaterloo Co-op Student of the Year Awards. Pearl completed two work terms at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre as a clinical research assistant. During this time she also wrote two manuscripts to be submitted to the Journal of Pain Management.

 

Craig Janes receives QE II Diamond Jubilee funding

School of Public Health and Health Systems (SPHHS) Director Craig Janes was recently awarded funding from the Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Advanced Scholars Program. Working with researchers from the Faculty of Environment and the Water Institute, Craig will use the funding to build institutional capacity in Zambia for addressing links between climate change and health.

New project to fund postdocs for public service

SPHHS has received a grant from Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) in partnership with Public Health Ontario to pilot the training of postdoctoral fellows for senior roles and positions outside academia. The funding may support training in project management and related skills in other units.


Mark Ferro named Canada Research Chair in Youth Mental Health

SPHHS’s Mark Ferro has been awarded a new CIHR New Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Youth Mental Health and will receive $500,000 over five years. Mark will lead a new study investigating how systemic inflammation may be associated with the onset of mental disorders among children.
