Dean's Message

SDG 17We all understand that the road ahead to beating the COVID-19 virus is likely far from over. However, in recent months many of us have reconnected in-person with our friends and loved-ones. I’ve witnessed an undeniable spark that happens when we come together to connect and plan for a better future face to face.

From transdisciplinary research to investment in students – tomorrow’s leaders and changemakers, partnerships are key to so much of what we hope to accomplish in the Faculty of Environment. I’m proud of the collaboration and teamwork I’ve seen take shape virtually since the pandemic began, and I cannot wait to see how these same partnerships will flourish in the coming year – my last year as Dean at the Faculty of Environment. This latest edition of our ENVISION newsletter is a celebration of the partnerships inspiring us to build a sustainable, equitable future — together.

Environment was the key catalyst for the creation of the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA), but it would not have been possible to establish such an interdisciplinary and impactful initiative without the partnership and support of stakeholders across the University. Established by Aviation researcher Suzanne Kearns, WISA received support from all six Faculty deans , Waterloo senior leadership, and broader Waterloo community who recognized that working together academically and with industry partners is the only way to transform this important sector. WISA Imagines a future where air transport connects people, commerce, and ideas— sustainably. Where innovative technologies fuel greener environmental practices. Where diverse, inclusive, and equitable systems drive social progress. And where a future-ready workforce creates global economic prosperity.

A partnership between Environment, and the firm MacNaughton Hermsen Britton Clarkson Planning Limited (MHBC), with leadership from alumnus Eldon Theodore, created a new award, the MHBC Award for Black and Indigenous Students. The annual award of $2,500 which began in 2021 and will continue until 2025 will be given to an undergraduate student who identifies as Black or Indigenous, and is enrolled in their first or second year in the School of Planning at the University of Waterloo.

Finally, successful partnerships are at the heart of any great endeavour, just ask the five incredible recipients of this year’s alumni awards. Collectively, the 2021 Faculty of Environment alumni award recipients have advanced critical research and social causes, protected sensitive lands, promoted knowledge translation and supported countless students through mentorship and philanthropic support. Everything they have accomplished has been strengthened by the partnerships they’ve forged along the way.
