BMath ’69: Andy Prozes, now living in Miami Beach and New York City, became the lead donor for a new Estonian Centre in Toronto.

BMath ’92: Kabir Choudry was named vice president, Field Technical Engineering and Strategy. Choudry will support cloud and customer success teams to shape Information Builders’ technical presence.

BMath ’99: Joseph Lee, along with his co-founders (also computer science grads) saw their company Volanté Systems on the Fastest-Growing Canadian Business Magazine and Maclean’s Growth 500 Top 50 list.

BMath ’01: Dr. Trevor Champagne recently joined the MedX Health Advisory Board. A dermatologist in Toronto, Trevor brings his expertise in artificial intelligence, virtual care, and teledermatology to the board.

BMath ’03: Mark Zekulin, President, Canopy Growth Corporation, was listed as one of Canada’s Top 40 under 40. Beyond his math degree, Mark studied law and before working with Canopy he provided legal, political and strategic advice to high-profile local and international corporate clients with an international trade law firm.

MMath ’04, PhD ’10: Alexander Hudek and the company he co-founded, Kira Systems, his the news as they raised $50 million from Venture Partners in New York.

BCS ’11: Alex Millar co-founded Bonfire Interactive, a company with software that streamlines procurement for public and private institutes. It was acquired for US $108 million on September 12.  

MMath ’14: Rhiannon Rose has recently put together a children’s book on statistics for kids aged 5-8 called Correlation Beach Vacation, the first of a series of rhyming, illustrated children's books focused on basic statistical concepts. 

BCS ’16: Kahlil Mangaliji, Co-founder and CTO of Fiix, named one of Canada’s Top 30 under 30 Developers. Prior to the co-founding of his company, he was an engineer at Apple and Facebook, and led the design team for BitPesa in Kenya.

BMath ’71 (MMath ’74, PhD ’80): Mike Carter was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. In 2012 he became a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (and thinks he might be the first Waterloo Math alumnus to do both).

BMath ’79: Brian Traquair was appointed as Chairman of Asset Control, a global provider of financial data management software to banks and other financial institutions.

BMath ‘84: Stephen Gledhill named CFO at POSaBIT, a financial technology company that delivers blockchain-enabled payment processing and point-of-sale systems for cash-only business.

BMath ’93: Lana Paton was named National Managing Partner, Business Units at PwC.

BMath ‘95 Michele Mosca was awarded the Cavaliere of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic on June 28. He also won the WEBIT Congress Security and Anti-Fraud Innovation Award.

BMath ’95: Tricia Gruetzmacher was made Director of the Interac lab at Communitech as the company invests on a new innovation lab.

MMath ’06: Jorge Zuloaga was hired as the Senior Director of Data Sciences at Big Squid.

BMath ’10, MACC ’10: Eric Myung was named the CFO of Sokoman Iron.

MMath ‘10, PhD ’14: Sarah Nadi was awarded a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Software Reuse where she is an assistant professor in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta.

MAAC ’15: Alethea Yi joined the Los Angeles Market of Siegfried as a Senior Associate.

BMath ’16: Kevin Yu was recruited to Atlas Partners as an associate.

BCS ’17: Amanda Fenn is working as a software engineer on the Xbox team at Microsoft. She has followed her passion for gaming, and is working hard to provide the best quality experience for passionate Xbox gamers around the world. She is also focusing on women in engineering efforts to make a better culture for the women in the industry. She volunteers at various girls who code events, and aims to inspire young girls to join the industry.Amanda Fenn

In memorium

We are sad to say that Josef Kates, a former Chancellor of the University of Waterloo (1979-1985) passed away on June 16. Josef was also honoured with an Order of Canada (2011) and a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Josef received a DMath in 2005 recognizing his accomplishments in the field which included building the first computer in Canada.

Hi Mathies! I am Jimmy. My mom is Liqun (Prof. Liqun Diao, PhD ‘13) and my dad is Chengguo (Prof. Chengguo Weng, PhD ‘10 ). I came into the world at 3:33pm, July 28th 2018. Retired professor Ian McGee and his sister were highlighted by the Waterloo Region Record on September 23. The Centre for Education of Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) has several things to celebrate this year. First, congratualations for winning the Canadian Mathematical Society Adrien Pouliot award. Secondly, they prepared the Canadian team for the 2018 International Olympiad in Informatics in Japan. Joey Yu, now a first-year student in the Cheriton School of Computer Science, earned a gold medal. Joey’s teammate, Ava Pun, currently in grade 12 at Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute, was the top-ranking female in the global competition.

Our Financial Analysis and Risk Management (FARM) Program (Risk Management Specialization) was pleased to announce that they received PRMIA accreditation. It is the first bachelor’s degree program in North America to gain the official PRM accreditation.

Robin Cohen, a professor with the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science was recognized as the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award winner. Robin is the first woman to be awarded this distinction.

Speaking of women in tech, Math Advancement and University Relations won silver at the CASE International Circle of Excellence Awards for #WeBelongInTech video.
