The Faculty of Mathematics Alumni Achievement Medal was established in 2002 to acknowledge the outstanding accomplishments and achievements of alumni of the Faculty to their communities and professions.
One (or more) medal(s) will be awarded annually to individual(s) who have a minimum of ten years post-graduation experience and have demonstrated one or more of the following:
- Outstanding professional or business accomplishments
- Distinguished community and public service
- Academic excellence
In 2016, the Award Selection Committee chose two outstanding alumni as recipients, one of whom was Glenn Ives, BMath ‘84.
Glenn is the Chair of Deloitte, Canada’s largest professional services firm. Born in England, Glenn attended the University of Waterloo, graduating in 1984 on the Dean’s Honour Roll. Glenn was in the co-op chartered accounting program and was Ontario’s UFE gold medalist in 1984. After seven years in public practice, Glenn spent over a decade as the senior financial officer in two publicly listed mining companies.
Glenn joined Deloitte in 1999 as a partner and audit specialist in the mining and financial institutions sectors. He was appointed Vice Chair in 2007 and elected Chair in 2010. Glenn also leads the mining sector for Deloitte in North and South America. He has served on the global Deloitte Board of Directors since 2010 and chairs the Risk Committee.
Glenn is the incoming Chairman of the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, and is a member of the Queen’s University Smith School of Business Advisory Council, University of Waterloo School of Accounting and Finance Advisory Board and Treasurer of West Vancouver United Church.
“For inspirational leadership in the professional services sector through his work at Deloitte, and strong philanthropic support of the University of Waterloo and its students,” the Faculty of Mathematics honours Glenn Ives with the Alumni Achievement Award for 2016.
