Tom Coleman (Dean of Math 2005-2010, Professor of Combinatorics & Optimization 2005-present) passed away April 20, 2021 after a battle with cancer. He was at home and surrounded by his family, including his loving wife Yuying Li (Professor of Computer Science).
Tom joined the Faculty of Mathematics with a vision to expand the reach of the Faculty of Math beyond the boundaries of the Waterloo campus. He was an enthusiastic supporter of international outreach, and deepening and broadening our recruitment efforts in China, India, and the US. He led many projects which propelled our faculty forward, including the Math 3 building. Tom made lasting contributions to our faculty and helped shape the place it is today.
Tom also had a passion for research and teaching in mathematical and computational finance, building the WatRISQ institute to further the reach of his ideas and research. He was selected as a SIAM Fellow in 2016 for his contributions to numerical optimization and finance, and for leadership in mathematics education and engagement with industry.
Please join me in extending our most sincere condolences to Tom’s family. His many students, former and present, colleagues and friends will miss him very much.
