Beyond Intelligence: Waterloo.ai builds powerful network of researchers

University of Waterloo has a vital role to play in end-to-end AI

University of Waterloo researchers are developing intelligent systems that can detect cancer and heart disease, understand language and emotion, and navigate roadways and factory floors better than ever before. But that’s just the start. A constant focus on key technologies and on the foundational breakthroughs to make them a reality will accelerate AI innovation that benefits everyone, everywhere.

In April, we made headlines when the Faculty of Mathematics joined with Engineering to launch of the Waterloo Artificial Intelligence Institute (Waterloo.ai). The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development was on hand for the launch event, meeting with researchers to discuss their work and participating in a panel that included Kate Larson, of the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science.

Our track record of partnership with industry will allow us to deliver effective, end-to-end AI research and innovation for hundreds and thousands of businesses across Canada – a truly inclusive AI revolution. Businesses of all sizes, across every industry will be able to pioneer new technologies in medical care, assistive devices, environmental monitoring, adaptive robotics, and autonomous driving.

Waterloo.ai represents a powerful network of researchers and their teams representing every corner of campus: computer science, statistics and actuarial sciences, combinatorics and optimization science; management sciences, electrical and computer, mechanical and mechatronics, systems design, civil and environmental, and chemical engineering; public health, health systems, biology, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, and physics and astronomy.

As research continues and partnerships grow, we expect this research investment to yield results that will boost the economic prosperity, wellbeing and quality of life of people all around the world.
