Director's Message

The start of this year has led to some significant milestones for the optometric profession.  I’d like to congratulate all optometrists, and particularly those on the OHIP negotiation committee, for a historic deal that took many years to reach. Right here at the School, we received Board of Governors approval, allowing us to go to the final design and construction tender on the Waterloo Eye Institute – a huge milestone in the development of this national centre of excellence. This update is thanks to significant contributions from optometrists and a matching gift opportunity from Dr. Marta Witer and the Inhatowycz Family Foundation (more than 50% complete – donate today to double your impact)

In this newsletter, we bring you the latest on events, research and news from the School. Firstly, we invite you to join us on June 2nd and 3rd for our annual Alumni Weekend & Waterloo Eye Institute Gala. The two-day event will include a mini tabletop tradeshow, School of Optometry tours, an evening gala featuring The Lost Faculties, and much more. Not only is this an exciting opportunity to receive your necessary CE credits, but also to reconnect with colleagues and professors!

We hope to see you there! Winter term saw the return of the Corneal Cup – where the Unicorneas took the top prize after a dominant run in the tournament.  Looking back to the 80s we hear from two classmates who fell in love with each other and the profession together.

Optometry continues to bring collaborative research to the table, and in this edition, we highlight a researcher, Dr. Elizabeth Irving, who is part of the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics to represent the human aspects of aviation sustainability, with a primary focus on the shortage of pilots.

With so many achievements and updates it is hard to fit it all into one space. We hope you enjoy our highlights in this Spring edition of our Insight Newsletter. If you have any suggestions on what you’d like to see in the next edition, reach out and let us know. We are grateful for the many ways in which you support the School, and we wish you a wonderful start of Spring!

Best wishes,
