Maddie Hemstreet
Maddie Hemstreet, like so many other students, chose to attend the University of Waterloo specifically for the co-op program. Over her time in the program, Maddie has discovered that co-op helps you to figure out the depth of your own capability and to stretch your skill set.

For her first co-op position, Maddie worked with the University of Waterloo’s math department in a communications and engagement role. While there, she did workshops with her employer to learn Excel and new skills that she was interested in.

In a later co-op term, Maddie had the chance to work for the Canadian government as a Digital Advocacy Support Officer in the Department of Global Affairs. While Maddie never expected to have a position with the government, she was able to push herself in the role. She worked with people all over the world, engaged in creative writing, and she learned to give a good interview and communicate well with supervisors in the process.

Through her experiences, Maddie was able to learn what she liked and explore what suited her best.

"Don’t be afraid to set goals for yourself and tell your employers what you want to learn. Test out things that you think you might like and discover if they’re right for you."
