Richard Hughson and Danielle Greaves continue to run tests with Canadian astronauts as part of the Canadian Space Agency’s Cardiovascular Echo series. While astronaut David Saint-Jacques was in space, the researchers collected data from him and other astronauts and then compared them to older adults here on Earth in an effort to slow down, or even reverse, stiffening arteries.

Michael Barnett-Cowan at computer screen with subject using virtual reality headset.

Michael Barnett-Cowan and a team found that virtual reality games can be a key tool for helping individuals with neurological disorders such as autism, schizophrenia and Parkinson’s because it can be used to shift their perceptions of time, which their conditions lead them to perceive differently than others.

Because there is evidence that exercise may play a role in mitigating the effects of dementia, Laura Middleton and her team are conducting randomized controlled trials to see how combinations of exercise with cognitive training, vitamin D and diet affect brain function among people at risk for dementia.
