Welcome back to Arts and Letters, the new web-based version of our publication for alumni and friends of UWaterloo’s Faculty of Arts. We hope this revised format and - most importantly - its content is engaging and informative for you, our vast and diverse community of Arts alumni worldwide.
This issue includes stories that illustrate the meaning and benefits of connections between the many people with ties to Waterloo Arts. We hope you too have opportunities to experience the many bonds which link us together.
An impressive cross-section of that community gathered in Hagey Hall to celebrate the grand opening of the Hub, our new student space. It really was great to see donors, alumni, current students, faculty, staff, and retirees come together to mark several intersecting milestones symbolized by the Hagey Hall Hub. I hope you enjoy the photo story we’ve included in this issue covering that special event.
Arts and Letters is one avenue through which we can reach out to our alumni to encourage the ongoing exchange of knowledge and insights and to celebrate the diverse array of people and interests that define Arts. Of course, we are all part of the 60-year-old UWaterloo community too.
President Feridun Hamdullahpur recently issued statement to the campus community on the University's response to the turmoil triggered by recent U.S. immigration and travel developments. I’d like to share this excerpt:
Diversity is a strength of this university and of our country. All of our students, faculty and staff, no matter where they come from, help to strengthen our community, bring new knowledge, talent and skills to higher education, research and innovation — to the benefit of all Canadians. At the University of Waterloo, we stand proudly for these values.
