Reunion Weekend, September 22

Speed Networking event, October 16 

Forty-seven alumni came out to speak to students at the annual Conversations Café Speed Networking event. Over 200 students participated, and learned from the great advice and experiences from the alumni.

John Goodman (BA ’89, Sociology), Kerstin Beavis (BA ’07, Arts and Business), Jessica Kuepfer  (BA ’12, English Literature), and Ron Kielstra (BA ’12, Political Science) were available for 2 hours in the new Hagey Hall Hub, allowing students to come and ask them questions. They were kept busy!

Students played Alumni Jeopardy to learn about ways to stay connected after graduation, and had an opportunity to have their resumes reviewed by a career advisor.

 

TomorrowLove Alumni Night, November 13

It was as full house in Theatre of the Arts for Alumni Theatre Night. New Canadian play TomorrowLove was produced by the Theatre and Performance program and explores love and technology in the very-near future.


Keeping the Human in Artificial Intelligence, November 28

Joel Blit, Carla Fehr and Lennart Nacke in a panel discussion

AI needs diverse human perspectives to ensure everyone benefits from technology. Professors in economics, philosophy, and human-computer interaction discussed the implications and how to mitigate potential threats posed by AI at a public lecture at the Kitchener Public Library.

Imagining Canada’s Future Cities, Toronto, January 24 

The University of Waterloo asked a panel of experts help us all explore how open data and smart technology, social enterprise, sustainability, and Canada’s commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development goals are creating cleaner, healthier smarter and more livable cities.

    Turning Back the Doomsday Clock, January 29

    It’s no joke. The Doomsday Clock is a widely recognized indicator of global threats from nuclear weapons, climate change, and disruptive technologies. We brought together scholars in political science, sociology, and English to discuss the real threats and possible actions for turning back the clock.

    This year, the men’s and women’s basketball teams took on the Lakehead Thunderwolves. To get the whole family involved, there was a kids’ activity during the women’s game and the annual airplane toss during the men’s game.
