WP3: Hydroeconomics of Agricultural Nutrient Legacies

Work Package Three (WP3) will link economic drivers and impacts of past and present agricultural practices to water quality in a hydro-economic decision support framework. Together with WP2 and WP4, WP3 will provide design guidelines for cost-effective and efficient adaptive management strategies to address water quality issues resulting from agricultural nutrient legacies under changing environmental and economic conditions.

WP3 will:

  • Identify ecological endpoints and welfare-relevant ecosystem services at the exemplar sites
  • Develop economic optimization procedures linking land-use change to water-quality impacts in support of policy and decision- making
  • Assess, value and translate externalities of agricultural land use legacies into land-use policy instruments
  • Identify (with WP4) the main sources of uncertainty in the hydro-economic assessment results, and
  • Integrate (with WP4) the economic optimization results in the Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) decision-support framework

WP3 researchers will engage in dialogue with key stakeholders and actors, and involve relevant public authorities, farmer organisations, individual farmers and the public at large as beneficiaries of water quality improvements in the research design, feasibility analyses and outcome evaluation.
