In this fireside chat we sit down with two inspiring leaders – Joanne McKinley (BMath'00, MMath'02), Waterloo’s 2020 J.W. Graham Medal in Computing and Innovation recipient and Director of Software Development at Google, and Sandra Banks, Vice-President, University Relations at Waterloo – as we discuss the impact and changes COVID-19 has had on women in the workforce. As an advocate for work-life balance, Joanne talks candidly about her experiences gaining increasing responsibility in her career while prioritizing family.

Introduced by Sophie Janszen-Spitman, WWIN student member and representative of the Women in Mathematics Committee, this conversation aims to inspire students and alumni at all stages of their career to create their own paths, be a role model for others and not be afraid to ask for changes in their workplace that will benefit not just women, but all employees. This event featured an exclusive fireside update and conversation for our Hong Kong alumni community with the 12th Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Mark Giesbrecht, and a brief talk about DATA CHALLENGES LAID BARE BY COVID-19 by Vivek Goel CM, Professor, Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto, and President Designate, University of Waterloo.

Professor Jochen Koenemann, Chair, Department of Combinatorics and Optimization, gave a public lecture that showcased the impact of mathematics and promising algorithms coming out of research within the Faculty to address challenges from delicate surgeries to 3D problems to global logistics and transport.

On November 18, we sat down with two inspiring entrepreneurial leaders – Susan Heystee, BMath ’86 and Managing Director at Golden Seeds, and Katie Witkop, Founding Designer at Faire – topics included the importance of supporting female-owned start-ups, potential funding sources for entrepreneurs, incubators, the experience of female founders and the recent shift towards women starting their own businesses during COVID-19.

Introduced by Keer Liu, 2019 Math Co-op Student of the Year, this conversation aimed to energize students and alumni at all stages of their careers to pursue their passions and not be afraid to solve the problems they see around them.
