NEW! Enhancing eye care through interprofessional collaboration

This online continuing education course focuses on the latest in clinical and therapeutic information, while highlighting the importance of interprofessional collaboration between pharmacists and optometrists in managing patients.

UWaterloo and You

The School is hosting monthly events for local optometrists to share information about regional health issues and to provide CE opportunities.

The March UWaterloo and You session featured an update on plans for the Waterloo Eye Institute and discussion about a regional plan for addressing long wait times for cataract surgery. Participants weighed in on a draft referral form developed by a working group of ophthalmologists, and provided feedback about 1) optometry assisting in the triaging of priority levels based on the HQO guidelines, and 2) reviewing the pros and cons of patient choice in going to the first available surgeon for cataract surgery. The ultimate goal is to create a “pipe” between electronic medical records (EMR) for both optometry and ophthalmology that would promote efficient coordination of care and communication between providers and patients.

April’s session included the Dr. Donald Larkworthy Memorial Lecture, featuring James Danckert, PhD, speaking on “Updating Mental Models Following Brain Damage.”

Canadian Journal of Optometry (CJO) now available on the Open Journal System

Through a collaborative effort between the CJO, the Witer Learning Resource Centre and the UWaterloo Library, the Canadian Journal of Optometry is now available on the University of Waterloo Library’s Open Journal System (OJS).

Through this open source system, authors can submit, publish and manage journal content online; it will also facilitate future uptake of the CJO articles by major databases such as PubMed, significantly increasing the discoverability of this journal and making its content accessible to a larger audience.
