Introducing Jenny Hirst

Friday, May 23, 2014

Jenny Hirst is the new Collections Maintenance Supervisor and Analyst located at the Davis Centre Library. In this role, she will be responsible for analyzing and writing reports to meet the maintenance needs of the libraries. This also involves ensuring the collections are in order and students have access to everything they need. Jenny also takes an active role within the staff as she is in charge of hiring, training, and supervising the casual staff at the Davis Centre Library.

Jenny is familiar with the Waterloo campus as she graduated with honours from the Mathematics program, majoring in statistics. Since graduating from Waterloo, Jenny worked as a business consultant with Sapient Global Markets in Toronto. There, she gained experience in identifying opportunities for process improvement within a company and implementing them end to end (requirements, analysis, testing, and implementation). With the Library undertaking many changes within the department, this past experience will be very relevant.

One of the largest developmental projects currently in progress is the Printed Monograph Materials Project (PMMP). Jenny has an active role in this and is enjoying it. It is a large scale project involving Waterloo, Laurier and Guelph libraries by refining the collections to remove possible duplicates and less used books, “we are now in the process of verifying the results of this analysis and establishing procedures for the withdrawal of items.”

Looking forward, Jenny is planning to attend the Excellence Canada retreat and receives software training in Cognos 10 to further help meet needs of the students and library. She is actively involved in other areas of the Library such as the Davis Centre Library’s Social Committee and is helping to plan upcoming events for the staff.

“I am really enjoying the work environment, everyone is wonderful to work with and it is very stress-free,” Jenny says. “Please feel free to drop by and say hi.  I’m always interested in finding out what is going on in other areas of the Library and the University as a whole.”

Welcome to the Library, Jenny!
