Professor Olaf Weber, from the School of Environment, Enterprise and Development at the University of Waterloo, is available for media interviews about Ontario's plan to sell green bonds to fund transit and infrastructure.

Professor Weber is the Export Development Canada Chair in Environmental Finance. His work looks at environmental and sustainable finance with a focus on sustainable credit risk management, socially responsible investment, social banking and the link between sustainability and financial performance of enterprises.

"Green bonds can be a successful way to finance green or climate-friendly projects in Ontario. Issuers of green bonds focusing on institutional investors have to be aware that the financial return of the green bond should be in the same range as for comparable conventional bonds," said Professor Weber. "In addition to financial returns, some bonds also have payouts in the form of carbon offsets that may be attractive for carbon intensive investors, but in order to deliver that, they should be certified by a reliable and objective auditor."
