The University of Waterloo is hosting the International Autonomous Robot Racing Competition (IARRC). Members of the media are invited to attend as engineering students from four schools in the U.S. and Canada race modified robot-controlled cars or robots they built.

The real challenge for teams isn’t the racing, but in creating and testing a robot that will work autonomously and correctly on its own, with limited supplies and funds.

Autonomous robots like the ones competing in IARRC are in use in a variety of scenarios, including space exploration, mining, search and rescue, remote sensing, automotive inspection and daily household tasks.

The top three teams will share $6,500 in prize money.

Date: Saturday, July 26, 2014

Time: Drag race is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Circuit race is 2 to 5 p.m.

Location: Sedra Student Design Centre, Engineering 5 Building, University of Waterloo, 200 University Ave. West

Parking is available in Lot B, behind the Engineering 6 building.
