Approximately six million Canadians suffer from chronic pain, and in recognition of National Pain Awareness Week, the School of Pharmacy at the University of Waterloo will host a public lecture next week on the subject of effective management and treatment of this widespread health issue.

Lynn Cooper, president of the Canadian Pain Coalition, will give a free talk entitled, "Pain: Our Silent Epidemic." She will draw on personal experience when she discusses the challenges of living with pain, and will identify tools and resources for self-management.

Professors Barb Coulston and Cathy Schill of the School of Pharmacy at Waterloo and Dr. Kim Moore from the Centre for Family Medicine will participate in a health-care panel discussion immediately after the keynote address. Among the topics discussed will be the various classes of pain medications available, drug interactions with food and herbal remedies, and the role of the community pharmacist in assisting with pain management.

"Many people in our society deal with chronic pain on a daily basis. The negative impact on their lives is significant," said Dave Edwards, Hallman Director of the School of Pharmacy at Waterloo. "The management of pain involves a number of complex issues, but health-care professionals must do a better job of working with patients to relieve their suffering."
