Hello! My name is Arthur (Haonan) Chen (陳皓楠). I’m a master’s student in the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science at the R2L Lab of the University of Waterloo, advised by Victor Zhong.

I’m sitting at the intersection of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Information Retrieval (IR).

My primary interest lies in using IR to help models better understand and generalize to new domains. I’m particularly interested in:

  • Language Grounding
  • Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)
  • Multimodal Learning

Before diving deep into NLP and IR, I delved into image signal processing (ISP) for low vision at Huawei Noah Ark’s Lab, dynamic sparse training (compression) at Cerebras Systems. I’ve had the privilege to work with John ZelekJimmy Lin, and Wenhu Chen
