Did you know that the human eye can detect single photons? Or that quantum random number generators are being used by online casinos? Quantum information science and technology is making its way out of labs and into the fabric of everyday life.
Gaining insight and understanding of how quantum information science and technology can impact us is just one of the goals of QUANTUM: The Exhibition. It wasn’t that long ago that the quantum realm seemed pretty far “out there” and the stuff of science fiction, but no longer. The Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) wants everyone – whether they are Waterloo alumni or not – to learn and understand more about quantum technologies. This 4,000 square foot, bilingual exhibition features interactive activities, games and videos to engage visitors of all ages in core quantum concepts from superposition to entanglement and how they’re shaping future technologies.
QUANTUM: The Exhibition, the first-ever travelling show on quantum information science and technology, will travel to science centres across the country next year as part of INNOVATION150 – a Canada 150 Signature Initiative. Along with four other leading science outreach organizations – Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, Actua, the Canadian Association of Science Centres and the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation – IQC is bringing QUANTUM: The Exhibition to centres in Vancouver, Saskatoon, Calgary, Halifax and Ottawa, and will help celebrate the University of Waterloo’s 60th Anniversary alumni celebrations.
Receptions will be hosted at the following locations on the tour:
- Calgary – July 5, 2017
- Ottawa – Early 2018
