Christmas Lanterns

Letter to the editor

Thank you Jean. The Christmas Lanterns worked great —
I had 46 students in my advanced chemistry classes make them. The photos are some of those that worked out the best. I even managed to squeeze some learning out of the day before vacation by having the students complete the balanced equation for the reaction and determine the species undergoing oxidation and reduction in the reaction.

[The lantern activity came all the way from Alfredo Mateus at Colégio Técnico – Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Brazil. You can find A Christmas lantern project: Carving a can with chemistry

Send photos of your students’ creations, and we will share them with Chem 13 News readers. Let your students’ work inspire other teachers. ]
