Student Julie Anne Aguilar, from Vicky Hughes’ chemistry class at King George Secondary School in Vancouver, British Columbia sent in this photo of sugar crystals. The photo is a result of a self-directed effort mixed with a moment of serendipity. Julie Anne made these crystals as an independent investigation to earn extra credit. She noticed how pretty the crystals were and “just for fun", she started to play with the lighting in her room with her camera. Using her desk lamp, she created wonderful effects making otherwise very ordinary crystals quite extraordinary.
Julie Anne will receive a set of the “Most Beautiful Periodic Table” placemats created and donated by Theodore Gray (available at periodictable.com).
There will be a 2012 Chemistry in Picture contest because the covers of Chem 13 News have never looked better.
