We asked Mike Jansen for his opinion on the Edmonton science teacher who was suspended for giving zeros for missed work. This story caught our attention because of the national media coverage in Canada. Science teachers do not typically make the news. Below is Mike’s reaction.

I use metal boards with moveable magnets to teach many of the mathematical components of the grade 11 chemistry course. The cost to produce the boards and the work involved with making them is minimal when compared to the fantastic gains made by my students.
In July 2012, the 44th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) was held in Washington DC. The competition included both practical and written examinations and had 280 students representing 72 countries worldwide.
