Welcoming students to chemistry

Decorated classroom door with beakers and bubbles.I hosted my first student teacher (Ms. Erin Robinson) last September and the first task I gave her was to create a welcoming door display for our students. I believe she found inspiration from a Pinterest post. The display was changed from “Chemistry + You” because we were also teaching a section of biology. It is difficult to tell from the photo but each student’s name was written on a laminated colored circle, which was punched using a dye-cut machine from our elementary school. We used one color for our chemistry students and one color for students taking biology. A dry-erase marker was used on the laminated “bubbles” so they could be used again. Posters displaying scientific information are nice but I think students really appreciate being welcomed and acknowledged as part of the class.

What do you do to welcome students?
