Ceiling breaker: Bessma Momani

Professor of Political Science, Faculty of Arts, Balsillie School of International Affairs

When the world needs to make sense of its most complex political and economic challenges, the media calls on Bessma Momani.

An author of more than 65 peer-reviewed articles and eight books, Momani is recognized globally for her expert insights on everything from the Syrian crisis to the volatility of oil prices.

Still, she was once told her media success is due to the fact she’s a woman who belongs to an ethnic minority group.   “It‘s just one way female academics are not given credit for their research or intellectual power.”

Momani, recently awarded a prestigious Trudeau Foundation Fellowship, says:

“There are many wonderful moments where being a woman provided so much insight and knowledge into my research.”
