Pure Mathematics
The Department offers exciting and challenging graduate programs leading to MMath and PhD degrees. We are home to 26 research active faculty, four staff, approximately 45 graduate students, several research visitors, and numerous undergraduate students. We offer a broad range of courses, covering the spectrum of pure mathematics. Students are also welcome to take relevant courses in other departments at the University.
Our graduate students work one-on-one with their supervisor to prepare a research paper or thesis for their master's degree, and are guided through the process of doing original research for their PhD.
Programs
Master of Mathematics (MMath) in Pure Mathematics
Quantum Information specialization option also available
The MMath degree is a one year research based program. All students are admitted to the “Research Paper” option, where students normally take three courses in each of the Fall and Winter terms, and complete a Research Paper supervised by a Faculty member during the Spring term. Students with a very strong undergraduate background and a supportive Supervisor may apply to the Graduate Committee to transfer to the “Thesis” option during the latter half of the Fall term.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pure Mathematics
Quantum Information specialization option also available
The goal of our PhD program is to develop our students into research mathematicians. The four year PhD program involves the successful completion of written Qualifying Exams, completion of four courses, a lecturing requirement, and the most important requirement, the completion of a PhD Thesis. The thesis must be of a standard that warrants publication in the research literature of the field, and our program is designed to build to this achievement.
