Fall Update From the Geomicrobiology Lab
Field season in Atlin, BC
In August, we had another successful field season based in Atlin, British Columbia. Sana, Decla, and Jenine flew to Whitehorse, Yukon before driving to Atlin for a week of fieldwork. This year's field season included sampling surface and groundwater, microbial mats, rocks, and sediments. Decla and Sana will use these samples in their thesis research studying microbial carbonate mineral precipitation reactions and trace metal cycling in ultramafic environments.
Goldschmidt 2024
At the end of the summer, the lab group travelled to Chicago, IL to attend Goldschmidt 2024. Benjamin, Decla, Sana, and Jenine all gave research presentations throughout the week. Goldschmidt was a great opportunity to learn about the most recent advances in geochemistry and geomicrobiology research, meet new colleagues in the international research community, and catch up with old friends.
New group members!
This Fall term, we have three new group members joining the Geomicrobiology Lab to complete their Honours Thesis projects. Emily Zelenyt, Joseph Spagnolo, and Kristina Mironova are all undergraduat students in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Waterloo. They will be studying microbial mineral weathering and biomineralization processes, targeting topics like mine site remediation, carbon sequestration, and rare Earth element recovery. We are excited to learn more about their research findings later in the academic year!
