We are inviting people to participate in our study involving exercise as a strategy to prevent future knee osteoarthritis.
We are looking for:

Healthy individuals between 25 to 44 years of age
-
Currently sedentary (fewer than 150 minutes of exercise per week)
-
With no osteoarthritis in their knees
Your participation in this study will involve:
-
A virtual visit to review eligibility, informed consent, and participation expectations.

A 16 week, at-home, exercise program of 3 virtual classes per week, led by a certified personal trainer
-
Two, 2-hour visits to our Hamilton location at the Imaging Research Center in St. Joesph’s Hospital (prior to & after the exercise program). These visits will include MRI scans of your knee and a blood draw.

Two, 1-hour visits to our University of Waterloo location (prior to & after the exercise program). These visits will evaluate how you walk, lunge, and squat using 3D motion capture (similar technology used in Avatar and other movies), and examine your knee strength.

Completion of questionnaires about you (age, race, sex, gender) and your level of physical activity.
In appreciation of your time, you will receive free supervised exercise, $25 at each MRI scan in Hamilton. Your name will also be entered into biweekly 25$ gift card draw to the business of your choice.

Virtual Exercise Class Times

Mondays at 4:00 – 4:45 pm

Wednesdays at 4:00 – 4:45 pm

Recordings of classes will be made available if you cannot attend all 3 virtual times
Unfortunately, there are a few people who cannot participate in this study. If you:

Are active for greater than 150 minutes per week
-
Have knee joint symptoms or surgeries, hip or ankle conditions, injuries in the last 3 months, or conditions worsened by exercise.

Need a walking aid for short distance
-
Exceed the MRI weight limit of 300lbs.

Someone from the Mobilize Lab will follow-up with you after the screening form has been completed. If you are eligible we will set up a virtual meeting before your first visit to our lab to complete the consent form together.
