Donors share their “why” during National Philanthropy Day thank-a-thon

12 Waterloo researchers among the most influential in the world

Twelve University of Waterloo researchers have been named on the annual Highly Cited Researchers™ 2024 list from Clarivate. The list identifies individual researchers and scientists who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their fields of research.  

Researchers named on the Highly Cited Researchers™ list are those whose publications rank in the top 1 per cent of citations from an international and wide-ranging network of citing authors.

How a $5 fee transforms the lives of student refugees

Mariak Achuoth’s journey to the University of Waterloo began in a Kenyan refugee camp, far from campus. Displaced by war in South Sudan, he dedicated himself to pursuing formal education, knowing it was his best hope for a better future beyond the camp. 

 His hard work opened a life-changing opportunity—a chance to apply to Canadian universities through the World University Service of Canada’s (WUSC) Student Refugee Program.

Nine Waterloo researchers awarded $7.5 million

Nine researchers at the University of Waterloo have been awarded $7.5 million in funding to support their research as part of the illustrious Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program.  

Each year, the CRC program invests up to $311 million to attract and retain some of the world’s most accomplished and promising minds.

Finding the intersection between science and art

Waterloo graduate Kiyoumars Zarshenas (PhD ’23) has been named a winner of the Science Exposed 2024 Jury Prize sponsored by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) with a striking image captured with a scanning electron microscope.  

The Science Exposed contest highlights photos of Canadian research to foster interest and curiosity in the sciences. Each year, 20 images are selected as finalists for the English contest and showcased by various means, including exhibitions.
