Message from the Board chair

The University of Waterloo’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Vivek Goel, has advised the Board of Governors that, due to family circumstances, he will not seek re-appointment when his current term ends on June 30, 2026.

On behalf of the Board of Governors and the entire Waterloo community, we offer our sincere thanks for his dedicated service so far to the University and we look forward to working together until the end of his term.

Faculty of Mathematics breaks ground on Mathematics 4 building

Donors, alumni, faculty, staff and students gathered on October 28 to celebrate the official groundbreaking for Mathematics 4 (M4), the new Faculty of Mathematics building that begins construction this fall.

The five-storey, 120,000 square foot building will serve as the heart of the mathematics district on campus, and include increased classroom space, labs and a cutting-edge eco-friendly server room, called the Green Room.

More than 2,500 new innovators join Waterloo’s alumni club

With jubilation and excitement, family, friends, faculty and staff came together this past weekend to recognize hard work and perseverance and usher more than 2,500 changemakers from students to alumni.

Behind the five ceremonies at the 129th convocation was a team of ambassadors, ushers, wayfinders, stage support and accessibility assistants, including 84 staff and alumni volunteers and 55 students who ensured a memorable experience for thousands of Waterloo graduates and their families.

Dr. Jagdeep Singh Bachher installed as Waterloo’s 12th Chancellor

On Friday, October 25, 2024, the University of Waterloo officially installed Dr. Jagdeep Singh Bachher (BASc '93, MASc '94, PhD '00) as its 12th chancellor, marking a new chapter in the University’s leadership. The chancellor serves as the University’s ceremonial head, representing the institution at public events, presiding over convocation ceremonies and conferring degrees, diplomas and certificates.

Optometry clinic has moved

The University of Waterloo School of Optometry & Vision Science’s public optometry clinic has moved to 419 Phillip St., Unit C, Waterloo, while a major renovation and expansion project goes on for the Waterloo Eye Institute. The interim location is approximately a three-minute drive or 10-minute walk away and will be open six days a week, with some evening appointments available. Patient parking is available onsite at no charge – use the driveway on the north side of the building.

Bridging art and architecture

A passion for art and drawing led Nicole Cao to pursue a degree in architecture, a journey that has now led to graduate studies at Yale University. Studying at the University of Waterloo’s School of Architecture and living in Cambridge, Ontario provided Cao with unique experiences that inspired a desire to continue learning and researching in her field.
