Escaping tunnel visions of success

For many students, university is an exciting way to propel their career whether it’s through their academic program, co-op jobs or networking. But these opportunities can also create serious pressures.

Students may develop unrealistic expectations of success, which puts their mental health at risk. It’s no longer getting a job you’re passionate about, but rather how grand the title or salary is.

Fostering student community on campus

When she began her co-op position as an arts student experience associate, Ann Gordon had two main goals: create events that would allow students to engage at their own pace and provide them with helpful tools and resources. “With my own student perspective in mind and the power to provide events and services, I wanted to help integrate people with the campus community in a way that suited them,” she says.

W Store launches new Indigenous collection

Two years after the successful launch of the first Indigenous collection at the W Store, in collaboration with local artist Alanah Astehtsi Otsistohkwa (Morningstar) Jewell, the Office of Indigenous Relations (OIR) and Print and Retail Solutions have partnered again to feature an exciting new line with Anishinaabe Onyota’a:ka artist, Tehatsistahawi (Tsista) Kennedy.

Royal Society U.K. bestows Hughes Medal on Dr. Linda Nazar

For an energy scientist, few things are more prestigious than receiving a Royal Society U.K. Hughes Medal. Named after Welsh-American scientist and musician David E. Hughes, who invented the first working radio communication system and the first microphone, the Hughes Medal is awarded yearly for outstanding contributions in the field of energy. Welcoming a new cohort of community-driven student leaders

Six recipients of the Loran Scholars Foundation have travelled across Canada to pursue their academic careers at the University of Waterloo.  

The Loran Scholars Foundation looks beyond marks when selecting their candidates — Loran Scholars are students who demonstrate integrity, courage, curiosity and a commitment to service. 

Loran Scholars will receive awards worth up to $100,000 over four years to support their studies, as they continue to embrace the challenge of making the world a better place for all.

Waterloo researchers awarded more than $4.3 million
