A defining moment

This September, the Faculty of Engineering is introducing a new tradition – the Waterloo Engineering pin - to symbolize students’ commitment to their studies and to each other.

Royal Society of Canada honours Waterloo researchers

Waterloo welcomes the 2023 cohort of Schulich Leaders

This year, the University of Waterloo is pleased to welcome 10 new first-year students to its cohort, through the Schulich Leader Scholarships program. Awarded annually to 100 high school students across Canada, the Schulich Leader Scholarships are granted to exceptional students who show great entrepreneurial promise in the field of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Embracing change

Expanding upon its long legacy of excellence, the Department of Management Sciences at Waterloo Engineering has undergone an official name change to better encapsulate the unit’s distinctive, interdisciplinary approach to education within the engineering field.

The introduction of the department’s new name – Management Science and Engineering (MSE) – follows more than a year of discussions, meetings and town halls with students, faculty, staff, alumni and senior engineering faculty leadership.

Garvit Jain of electrical engineering and Steven Yang of software engineering will begin their undergraduate degrees this fall.

The future of AI is interdisciplinary

Dr. Lai-Tze Fan wants to make a more equitable AI. Critical approaches to advancing artificial intelligence are urgent, she says. “We tend to want AI to do more and more tasks for us and not be involved ourselves. But if that tendency continues, critical thinking in the process of generation is going to collapse in on itself and we won't have a responsible role in the technology anymore. And that could make AI a dehumanizing tool.”
