University of Waterloo students and alumni are changing the game by launching companies with global impact for humanity and our planet. Their remarkable achievements have earned them spots on this year’s illustrious Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list.  

The annual list highlights young entrepreneurs who are making a difference in their fields. Waterloo-linked founders were named in artificial intelligence (AI), green tech, education, food and drink and manufacturing categories. 

On December 6, communities across Canada come together to observe the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. The day honours 14 female engineering students who were murdered 35 years ago at École Polytechnique de Montréal (now known as Polytechnique Montréal) in an act of gender-based violence.

Each year, the Faculty of Engineering hosts an event to remember, reflect and respond to the 14 lives that were tragically cut short, and to acknowledge the violence that women and girls who continue to experience today.

The University of Waterloo is strengthening its leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) education with two initiatives: an open online AI literacy course for its community and a Waterloo.AI workshop on generative AI in K-12 education. Together, these initiatives highlight the University’s commitment to fostering responsible AI knowledge and shaping a future where AI is thoughtfully understood and applied across all levels of education and society.

A Velocity health-tech startup focused on improving health-care communication has announced an exciting new partnership with Grand River Hospital (GRH) to address communication challenges within the hospital’s Renal Program. This collaboration — a pre-commercialization project spanning three months — will leverage MedInclude’s artificial intelligence (AI) platform to enhance patient engagement and streamline interactions between health-care providers and patients. 

Velocity, the entrepreneurship center of the University of Waterloo — the number one school in Canada for entrepreneurs — has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with The Blockchain Center in Abu Dhabi.

Most older adults prefer to age in their homes and stay active in their communities. For many, malnutrition will derail those plans due to involuntary weight loss, micronutrient deficiencies and frailty. These conditions don’t just impact quality of life, they frequently necessitate a transition to living in a long-term care facility.  

“Do you know where I can find children to eat?” Th’owxiya asks, looking around the auditorium. Dozens of elementary school children shift in their seats and raise their hands, yelling out, “Right here. Me, me!”

The Waterloo Engineering community gathered to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of three distinguished alumni during this year’s Engineering Awards Dinner.

Hosted by Dr. Lisa Aultman-Hall, Professor and Chair of Systems Design Engineering, the event highlighted the exceptional contributions of leaders in thermal management, community service, and computational fluid dynamics, showcasing the broad impact of Waterloo Engineering alumni on technology, society, and innovation.

Shahan Salim, a PhD candidate in the School of Public Health Sciences, continues to make strides in advancing air quality research and technology through his participation at the United Nations climate change negotiations, known as COP.
