Keith Hipel learned to love nature and care deeply about the environment during glorious boyhood summers spent playing outside at his family cottage on Belwood Lake.

Six decades later, that passion was still fueling his life’s work as a systems design engineering professor at the University of Waterloo today as he won a coveted $100,000 national award for scholars.

An international robotics expert from Germany is joining the University of Waterloo to lead a multidisciplinary research program backed by $10 million in funding from the federal government.

Three Waterloo Engineering students have come up with a unique solution they feel may solve the housing crisis in Atlantic Canada’s Indigenous communities and possibly take a top award in Australia at the Hult Prize challenge, the world’s largest student social entrepreneurship competition.

The Ontario Advanced Manufacturing Consortium (AMC), a joint partnership between McMaster University, University of Waterloo, and Western University, is helping to accelerate industry adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies, which will create jobs and strengthen the province’s reputation as a leading manufacturing region.

Since AMC was launched in April 2017, nearly 100 companies have benefited from the advanced manufacturing experts and state-of-the-art facilities at Waterloo. 

Once the explosive ordnance disposal teams dug up the 100-year-old artillery projectiles, it was safe for French landscapers to begin their work on the new Centennial Park at Vimy Ridge.

They prepared the ground for the planting of the descendants of the majestic oaks that once stood tall on that stretch of land before being destroyed in April 1917 in the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Real-world experience working on a Waterloo vehicle team helped an undergraduate student land a plum co-op job at Tesla.

Members of the company’s hiring committee were so impressed with Devon Copeland’s work with Waterloo’s Midnight Sun Solar Car that they asked him to make a presentation about his involvement with the team.

Whether it’s creating a mural in a public space or building a tiny mobile home, two Waterloo School of Architecture alumni are fulfilling their artistic passions in unique ways.

Stephanie Boutari (BArch ’11 and MArch ’14) and Adam Schwartzentruber (BArch ’11) chose to study architecture not knowing where it would lead, but driven by a common desire to pursue a creative career.
