On March 9, the University of Waterloo announced that Dr. Bill Rosehart, a nationally respected academic leader, scholar, and three‑time University of Waterloo graduate (PhD ’01, MASc ’97, BASc ’96), has been appointed the next President and Vice‑Chancellor of the University of Waterloo. His five‑year term will begin on July 1, 2026.

The appointment follows a comprehensive search process led by the Presidential Nominating Committee, which included broad consultation with Waterloo faculty, staff, students and community partners.

Members of the nominating committee have shared their reflections on Dr. Rosehart’s appointment.

Murray Gamble, Chair, Board of Governors

“Dr. Rosehart impressed the Presidential Nominating Committee with his genuine, people-centred approach to leadership and his clear understanding of what makes a comprehensive university thrive. He is a collaborative relationship builder and a careful listener who brings integrity, respect and a deep appreciation for the people that make up a university — its faculty, staff and students. As a three-time Waterloo graduate, he understands the ethos of our institution.”

“Bill demonstrates a natural leadership style that clearly shows how much he cares about people. Getting to know Bill, I’ve come to see that he builds deep and genuine relationships within the university and with external stakeholders. I’m excited for Waterloo Region to get to know Bill as he builds friendships and partnerships that will enrich our community, province and the country.”

Alexie Tcheuyap, Dean of Arts (Faculty of Arts representative)

“Bill is one of the rare leaders who brings together two essential qualities: the distinction of a highly accomplished scholar and the effectiveness of a talented, pragmatic leader. His proven track record, combined with an ambitious yet grounded vision for Waterloo, inspires confidence and optimism about the University’s future.”

“He brings a clear and balanced understanding of the role and responsibilities of a comprehensive university, alongside a well-documented and meaningful engagement with the arts. [...] With Bill’s leadership, Waterloo is well positioned for continued success.”

Tracy Primeau, community-at-large representative (elected)

“Bill’s obvious passion for students, his love of Waterloo and his history of collaboration with all stakeholders and rights holders make him the perfect choice to lead us through our next challenges and opportunities successfully.”

Lisa Aultman-Hall, Professor and Chair of Systems Design Engineering (faculty-at-large representative)

"Bill truly understands Waterloo — he knows this institution and cares deeply about it. Even more importantly, he clearly demonstrated a strong appreciation for the essential role of all disciplines, especially the humanities and social sciences, at this moment in a global society overwhelmed by data and technology.”

"We were fortunate to have several excellent candidates. Still, after many hours of work and careful consideration, it felt deeply satisfying to reach the shared vision that Bill was the right leader for us. Bill is about people. I hope our entire community will support him well as he steps into this new role, and I thank the Waterloo community for allowing me to represent them in this nomination."
