In 2011, I was getting ready to graduate from the University of Waterloo in Geography and Environmental Management. My dream job was to be a high school gym and geography teacher. My days would be spent playing dodgeball, looking at maps, and wearing sweatpants! Why not? I spent many years preparing my application for teacher’s college by running school age camps and volunteering as a field hockey coach. But when the time came to apply, I got advice from teachers saying there were too many teachers, and not enough jobs.

From his front-row seat in the Physical Activities Complex (PAC), Martin Timmerman witnessed one of the most storied moments in the history of Warriors basketball. That experience inspired Martin to start a decades-long project that has made an impact on Waterloo student-athletes and university basketball teams across the country.

Once the explosive ordnance disposal teams dug up the 100-year-old artillery projectiles, it was safe for French landscapers to begin their work on the new Centennial Park at Vimy Ridge.

They prepared the ground for the planting of the descendants of the majestic oaks that once stood tall on that stretch of land before being destroyed in April 1917 in the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Exceptional students were recognized along with accomplished graduates and a longtime corporate supporter when more than more 400 people gathered in November for the 2018 Waterloo Engineering Awards Dinner.

In addition to hundreds of graduate and undergraduate students cited for excelling in academic and extracurricular pursuits, the annual event at Federation Hall honoured alumni in four categories and a company with a long history of backing researchers and students.

Whether it’s creating a mural in a public space or building a tiny mobile home, two Waterloo School of Architecture alumni are fulfilling their artistic passions in unique ways.

Stephanie Boutari (BArch ’11 and MArch ’14) and Adam Schwartzentruber (BArch ’11) chose to study architecture not knowing where it would lead, but driven by a common desire to pursue a creative career.
