When Jenna Yee dreamed of becoming a pilot, the Waterloo aviation student assumed she’d start small, spending time in the north to get her flying career off the ground.

But a new five-year agreement between the University of Waterloo and the Jazz Aviation Pathways Program (Jazz APP) means some aviation students will get a jump on a more direct career pathway with a major airline.

“This opportunity really opens a whole new pathway into the industry,” says Yee.

The study’s findings shed light on a tax planning strategy that is not currently focused on by governments, which tend to focus their efforts on firms who move their money from countries with higher taxes to lower tax-rate countries to save.

“Governments expend considerable effort to prevent their tax bases from being eroded by companies moving their money offshore,” said Ken Klassen, the study’s author and an accounting and finance professor at Waterloo. “This insight could help tax authorities better target their efforts,”.

The research, recently published in Transportation Research Part C, used social media analytics, algorithms and computer simulation to match would-be carpoolers with people driving to work.

“Usually carpooling is about just matching people depending on geographical location and time of schedule,” said Bissan Ghaddar, professor of management engineering at Waterloo and author of the study. “We wanted to include the social aspect into the equation, because it’s always awkward when there is silence in the car, especially if it’s a long commute.”

Community members who embody the University of Waterloo’s spirit of innovation and contribute to making Waterloo Region strong, will be eligible for the new President’s Community Impact Awards.

The awards, announced by Feridun Hamdullahpur, president and vice-chancellor, were created in honour of the University of Waterloo’s 60^th anniversary. Nominations open on June 1.

Experts at the Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing Lab, which is backed by nearly $27 million in cash and in-kind support, will help Canadian companies tap the enormous potential of AM, commonly known as 3D printing, while also advancing the technology itself through research.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Waterloo and the Université libre de Bruxelles,  appears in Nature Communications. If found that man-made dam reservoirs trap nearly one-fifth of the organic carbon moving from land to ocean via the world’s rivers.

While they can act as a significant source or sink for carbon dioxide, reservoirs are poorly represented in current climate change models.

A road that runs between the three Faculty of Mathematics buildings on campus is being named in honour of William Tutte, a brilliant mathematics professor who helped establish the Faculty as a global powerhouse.

The report, published yesterday as a supplement to Tobacco Use in Canada: Patterns and Trends, found that two per cent of Canadian students in Grades 7 to 12 – equivalent to more than 43,000 students – use marijuana every day. Daily smoking is similar at 1.8 per cent, according to the Canadian Student Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey.

Occasional cannabis use remains high among youth: one in five students reports ever trying it, and one in 10 reports use in the last 30 days.

It was a hackathon with a difference. Instead of a round-the-clock event dominated by male hackers - Waterloo’s first Equithon was structured across three days with no overnights - and 50 per cent of the hackers were women.
