Community discussion to shed light on wellbeing of Ontarians

Researchers from the University of Waterloo and practitioners in public health will host a community discussion on the wellbeing of Ontarians Wednesday evening.

The Canadian Index of Wellbeing (CIW), based at Waterloo, organized the event as part of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Café Scientifique series. The series seeks to bring health researchers and community members together to discuss health-related issues.

Visionary on the environment speaks at University of Waterloo

Media are invited to attend a public lecture by Peter Gleick, president and co-founder of The Pacific Institute based in California, hosted by the University of Waterloo’s Water Institute.

Gleick, named by the BBC as a visionary on the environment, will describe the three ages in water, from early use through the industrial revolution to what he considers the ongoing transition to a sustainable water future. He will cover the current challenges posed by climate change, energy, agriculture, and ecosystems and will give his vision of a sustainable future.

The University of Waterloo has grown the number of childcare places available on campus with the opening of a new daycare facility.

The Bright Starts Cooperative Early Learning Centre, an amalgamation and expansion of three long-standing daycare’s at the University, is now the largest child care centre in Waterloo Region offering care for more than 160 children.

Biologists have discovered how an outer shield over T-type channels change the electrochemical signaling of heart and brain cells.  Understanding how these shields work will help researchers eventually develop a new class of drugs for treating epilepsy, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

The study from the University of Waterloo is published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry today and is featured as the “Paper of the Week” for its significance.

Waterloo Global Science Initiative (WGSI) is pleased to launch its Equinox Fellowship, a program that funds projects initiated by young people between the ages of 18 and 30 inspired by the priorities outlined in the Equinox Blueprint: Learning 2030 (PDF) which launched globally last week in Oxford, UK at the World Literacy Summit.

Waterloo’s global connections

A University of Waterloo delegation, led by the president and vice-chancellor of the University, is in China this week to strengthen relationships with leading Chinese universities. Feridun Hamdullahpur will meet with representatives from five of China’s top universities:

  • Tsinghua University
  • Nanjing University
  • Beijing Jiao Tong University
  • Zhejiang University
  • Soochow University

Hamdullahpur will also learn more about China’s education policy through meetings with representatives of the Ministry of Education.
