Convocation is a special time to celebrate a significant milestone. These 14 exceptional students have been chosen to represent the graduating class of 2023.

Below they share about their academic journey filled with innovation, resilience and passion.  

Why did you choose to study at the University of Waterloo?

A beer tasting tour featuring local craft brews, four timeless venues, perfectly paired gourmet appetizers, alumni and friends. An exclusive Alumni Weekend experience that the Affiliated and Federated Institutions of Waterloo (also known as the university colleges) are uniquely positioned to offer, was on tap June 2, 2023.

For the first time on our campus, the Two-Spirit Pride flag is being flown alongside the Intersex-Inclusive Pride Progress flag, during the month of June as part of Pride Month activities. Flying the Two-Spirit Pride flag beautifully represents the intersection of National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month and signifies the University’s ongoing commitment towards indigenization across our campuses.  

Environment students possess a diversity of passions and many are involved in varsity sports. However, juggling the financial and time-constraint demands of their academics and athletics is no small feat.

In March 2023, the Faculty of Environment in collaboration with Athletics and Recreation launched the Environment Student-Athlete Award to recognize students who through the pursuit of both sports and studies, become resilient leaders and problem solvers with an awareness of social and sustainability issues.

Black and Indigenous scholars will have new opportunities to advance their research thanks to a commitment of $388,000 to expand the prestigious AMTD Waterloo Global Talent Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.

This past weekend, more than 1,000 people flooded the University of Waterloo campus to meet with old friends, celebrate milestone anniversaries and see how our institution has changed. The weekend included multiple events, hosted by Alumni Relations, Faculties, Schools, University Colleges and alumni volunteers.

Convocation is a time of immense pride for our graduands as they celebrate their accomplishments with family and friends. Rachel Jung (BA ’23) will cross the stage this spring and receiving their Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts and Arts and Business.

Waterloo does it again.

Just as a trio of Waterloo coders had in 2021, a team of three Waterloo algorithmic programmers topped the competition at the 2023 International Collegiate Programming Contest North America Championship, held on May 29 at the University of Central Florida.

Waterloo overcame the competition, including trios of programmers from Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Harvard and the University of Toronto.

If you were on campus last term, you might recognize Emily Radcliffe from posters advertising the Theatre and Performance program’s production of Portia’s Julius Caesar. For herself, as strange as it was to see her own face posted around campus, it was even more unexpected to be cast in the lead role of Portia. “It was an experience that helped me to unlearn a lot of lessons I was taught over the years about who I am, who I can be, and what I'm capable of.”
