The School of Optometry & Vision Science (UWOVS) is partnering with The Cowan Foundation and the Lions Club of Canada to develop a coordinated vision plan for the Region of Waterloo Public Health to screen every child in senior kindergarten (SK). This plan is to meet the 2018 Ontario Public Health Standards set by the Ministry of Health.

This is the first time many of you will be writing final exams at university. It’s okay to be nervous or anxious! Know that our UWaterloo community is here to support your success.

Each year in Canada, November 11 is marked as Remembrance Day. Canadians come together on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, as that is the day and time when the armistice was signed to end the First World War.

We acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country and acknowledge our responsibility to work for the peace they fought hard to achieve. Not all who serve are acknowledged as a hero, so this day is an opportunity to do so.

A beloved former dean whose dynamic leadership was the driving force behind the construction of Engineering 7 will be recognized with the designation of the building’s IDEAs Clinic in her honour.

At an event today celebrating the legacy of Pearl Sullivan, the space will be named the Pearl Sullivan Engineering IDEAs Clinic to commemorate the accomplishments of the eighth dean of Waterloo Engineering and the first woman to hold the post who died after a long cancer battle almost two years ago.

“The first year, I actually did not play because I was so concerned about the rigours of engineering at Waterloo,” the alumnus says. “But I found that I missed playing so much.”

If reducing our reliance on fossil fuels seems like a monumental task, that’s because it is. Just ask PhD candidate Choyon Saha. He’s making it his life’s work to help tackle climate change but he doesn’t have any illusions about what it will take to address one of the biggest threats of our time.

The RBC Foundation announced today a $2-million donation to the University of Waterloo to bolster the Bachelor of Sustainability and Financial Management. The program, the first of its kind in Canada, prepares accounting and finance professionals with additional skills beyond practicing accounting and financial management including environmental law, social equality, carbon emissions and ecosystem science. 

The School of Optometry and Vision Science is celebrating a commitment of $1 million from IRIS, Canada’s most established network of optometrists, opticians and ophthalmologists.  

This September, Hurricane’s Ian and Fiona underscored what we already know — extreme weather events are increasing in frequency and severity. These events displaced approximately 30 million people worldwide in 2020, and this number is expected to increase in the coming decades because of climate change.  

Diana is the new chair of the University of Waterloo Alumni Council. “I am privileged to volunteer alongside other proud Waterloo alumni who are equally passionate about the University and the student experience,” says Diana. “Through gifts of time, talent and financial support, our Alumni Council members represent the 236,000 people around the world who have graduated from Waterloo since its inception in 1957.”
