Today, Anetta Ille (BSc ’19) and Alex Ille (BSc ’15) both serve on the board of directors of STEM Biomedical, a non-profit dedicated to the advancement of biomedical research. As children, they faced a life-threatening disease. Read on to see how this experience inspired their careers, and their latest efforts to help today’s childhood cancer patients.

Dr. Kelsey Leonard believes that to protect water for future generations we need to recognize its inherent rights to exist, flourish and naturally evolve. A global movement has emerged in recent years known as Rights of Nature or Earth Law whereby governments are legally recognizing the personhood of natural entities such as rivers and mountains.

Water is fundamental to human health and a key social justice issue. Lack of access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation is one of the greatest human health and environmental threats facing the world’s most vulnerable.

Today, the Health Sciences Campus Clinic for COVID-19 vaccination opens at the corner of King and Victoria in downtown Kitchener. This large clinic, led by the Centre for Family Medicine, is an integral part of Region of Waterloo’s vaccine rollout strategy. It will run from March 15 until the end of August and will ramp up to be open seven days a week when a steady supply of vaccines is available.

The Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo has received a $1 million donation to launch the Δ Program (Delta Program) and provide pivotal funding for the Future Cities Initiative, a multidisciplinary endeavor focused on grooming the future leaders of city building and harnessing research, knowledge and innovation to create just, healthy and sustainable communities.

As the global pandemic enters its second year, research is showing women with children are spending significantly more time in caregiving and housework than their male counterparts. This is true in the corporate and service worlds as it is in academia. This is also true for dual-career couples in which women still bear the larger burden of what is traditionally accepted as “women’s work.” 

I graduated from Waterloo’s environmental engineering program in 2018. During university, I developed my passion for giving back to my community and helping others around me.

Mike Stork — an esteemed business founder, angel investor and community leader — has committed $1.5 million to Waterloo’s Innovation Arena. The $35 million capital project will restore a University-owned warehouse in Downtown Kitchener’s Innovation District. Located at the corner of Victoria and Joseph Streets, the 90,000-square-foot building will become Velocity’s new home.

The University of Waterloo’s new Innovation Arena has received a $1.5 million gift from local entrepreneur, angel investor and community leader Mike Stork.

The gift supports a $35-million capital project to restore a University-owned warehouse in Downtown Kitchener’s Innovation District. Located at the corner of Victoria and Joseph Streets, the 90,000-square-foot building will be the new home of Velocity, Waterloo’s signature entrepreneurship program.
