As governments and businesses in Canada and around the world look to rebuild from the economic fall-out of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have an opportunity to rethink and retool capitalism to meet the challenges of the climate crisis.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly created an imperative to restart,” said Jean Andrey, dean of the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo. “But it's also an opportunity for us to rethink economies at the local, national and global scale.”

A Waterloo spinoff company is helping businesses balance sustainability with profitability by using artificial intelligence to mine companies’ documents, reports and even social media posts to quantify their impact on social issues like gender equity and the environment.

For third-year student Chukwunonso J. Moneme, mental health initiatives have always been close to his heart.

“Mental health affects everybody — future artists, scientists and engineers of the world. It affects the people who are going to change the world. Post-secondary institutions should always make student wellness their top priority.”

This passion led Moneme to represent Waterloo’s undergraduate students on the University’s Committee on Student Mental Health (Co-SMH).

Each December, Giving Tuesday harnesses the power of social media and the generosity of people to bring about real change.

After Black Friday and Cyber Monday, people around the world come together on Giving Tuesday to support charitable causes. Over the past six years, alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff and retirees have raised $796,886 for Waterloo through our Giving Tuesday campaigns.

A University of Waterloo partnership with the City of Kitchener to further develop the Health Sciences Campus in downtown Kitchener’s Innovation District is moving ahead. 

Goel is recognized in Canada and around the world as a leading public-health researcher, health-services evaluation expert, and champion for the use of research evidence in health policy making.

Goel has held a number of senior leadership roles at the University of Toronto including as Vice-President and Provost and most recently as Vice-President Research and Innovation.

Vivek Goel, a distinguished scholar with extensive achievements in research, teaching and leadership across both public and private sectors, will become the seventh president and vice-chancellor of the University of Waterloo.

Goel, who begins his five-year term on July 1, 2021, is recognized in Canada and around the world as a leading public-health researcher, health-services evaluation expert, and champion for the use of research evidence in health policymaking.
