More than three decades after leaving to make his mark on the world, an alumnus of Waterloo Engineering has been formally honoured by his Ontario hometown for his athletic achievements.

A mural of Taly Williams (BASc ’94, civil engineering), who played for the Waterloo Warriors before suiting up in the Canadian Football League (CFL), was unveiled recently on the wall of the local arena along with other successful athletes from Haliburton.

The Toronto-Waterloo Region Corridor has been recognized as one of the world’s premier locations to start a company.

A recently released report ranks the region top in Canada for startups and among the fastest growing in North America.

The ranking lists the University of Waterloo as a key player in the corridor because of its unique entrepreneurial culture and as host to the largest post-secondary co-op program in Canada.

On July 1st, 2022, the Faculty of Environment will say farewell to Jean Andrey, fondly called Dean Jean, our esteemed dean of eight years. The whole community wishes her the best in her retirement as we reflect on all her accomplishments and contributions to the Faculty.

Gordon Stubley is the 2022 recipient of a lifetime service award from the leading engineering and design education organization in Canada.

Stubley, a retired mechanical engineering professor, Waterloo Engineering alumnus and Distinguished Professor Emeritus, becomes the fifth engineering educator honoured with a Lifetime Service Award from the Canadian Engineering Education Association (CEEA).

Looking back on their undergraduate years, Michelle Liu (she/her) and Allie Kennington (they/them) wish there had been more on-campus support and mentorship for them as 2SLGBTQ+ engineering students.

Five Waterloo Engineering faculty members have been elected fellows by the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE).

The CAE is the national institution through which Canada's most distinguished and experienced engineers provide strategic advice on matters of critical importance to the country.

The new fellows include David Clausi of systems design engineering, Duane Cronin and Zhongchao Tan of mechanical and mechatronics, Karim Karim of electrical and computer engineering and Maria Anna Polock of civil and environmental engineering.

Jeremy Pittman, a professor of Planning in the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo, was recently appointed as a member of new federal Nature Advisory Committee (NAC), created by Environment and Climate Change Canada to foster ways for Canadians to engage positively with our natural environment.

The University of Waterloo is proud to announce that three of its students will receive one of Canada’s highest honours in academia — the Governor General’s Gold Medal.

Trisha Cho is not only a powerhouse on the ice, but an excellent student who embodies leadership and hard work. A varsity hockey player who is graduating this spring with a BA in Recreation and Sport Business and a minor in Event Management, she joins 587 Faculty of Health students at this term’s convocation celebrations. She will return in the fall to begin a master’s in Recreation and Leisure Studies. 

It’s fair to say that Sana Ahmad (BSc ’22) was always planning on attending the University of Waterloo. Afterall, she practically grew up on campus as a child of two Waterloo alumni from the Faculty of Engineering and saw her older sister also graduate from Engineering in nanotechnology. The only hiccup was the subject matter Ahmad was to study. Although the Cambridge, Ontario native showed an inherent interest in STEM and engineering, Ahmad was really interested in rocks and had accumulated an impressive rock collection early on in life.
