Fighting fire with seaweed

Two recent Waterloo Engineering graduates were named national finalists in a prestigious design contest this week for an idea that began taking shape in a first-year class.

Anneke van Heuven (BASc ’21) and Elias Trouyet (BASc ’21) were just starting the nanotechnology engineering program when they learned that the chemicals in most existing flame retardant materials can cause long-term health effects including cancer.

UWaterloo startups rank second in North America for investor ROI

Investors looking for higher returns might be wiser to look to Waterloo companies than ventures started by alumni at Stanford, MIT and Harvard.

A new report from a U.S. platform for investors and startups has found that ventures founded by Waterloo alumni produce a higher-than-expected return on investment than their counterparts at the three American institutions.

Alumnus athlete earns hometown honours

An alumnus of Waterloo Engineering who went on to a professional football career will be honoured with a mural in his Ontario hometown after a successful campaign by a determined group of kids.

Students in a grades 7 and 8 French immersion class at J. Douglas Hodgson Elementary School urged politicians in Haliburton to recognize the achievements of Taly Williams (BASc ’94, civil engineering) and his sister Lesley Tashlin alongside five local athletes already featured on an arena wall.

Advancing energy storage systems

Funding from a prestigious Canadian scholarship will help a new chemical engineering doctoral student improve the performance and lifespan of lithium-ion batteries.

Manh-Kien Tran will receive $50,000 annually for the next three years from the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship to further develop his research focused on building a smart cloud-based battery management system.

WATonomous drives in a top performance

Waterloo’s student-led autonomous vehicle team pulled into second place in the final stage of the four-year international SAE AutoDrive Challenge.

The competition, which ended last month, had teams convert a stock Chevrolet Bolt EV into a fully autonomous vehicle.

WATonomous completed the last leg of the competition with its best results to date, improving on the team’s third-place finish in the third year of the competition.
