Waterloo leads Canadian universities in producing successful entrepreneurs

The University of Waterloo ranks as number one amongst Canadian universities for producing the most successful entrepreneurs with undergraduate degrees according to the 2023 PitchBook university rankings. Waterloo remains ranked 21st in the world for founders.

Waterloo researchers awarded more than $38.4 million

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is a non-profit corporation that invests in research infrastructure at Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals and non-profit research institutions. Since 1997, the CFI has been supporting Canadian researchers each year to carry out world-class research through grants and government funding.

A robot to help reduce wildfire risk in remote areas

North America has 10 million kilometres of overhead power lines, and when vegetation come into contact with one, it can be like tinder to a flame.

“Once they come in contact with trees, the risk of forest fires increases,” says Anson Maitland (PhD ’19), co-founder of Enerza, a company at Velocity, University of Waterloo’s startup incubator. “With our robot, utilities can spot vegetation risks, corrosion or birds' nests near the line and send out a team to handle it.”

Velocity has launched a new program called Foundations to help students develop an innovative mindset, a skill which is becoming increasingly important.

Applicable to any career, learning how to ask great questions for a deeper understanding of a problem can be a professional lifeline, in particular due to the ubiquity of large language models like ChatGPT that is giving rise to questions about the future of job opportunities.

The list highlights some of the most entrepreneurial minds in Toronto, who work in industries like technology, finance, health, sports and the arts.

The game-changers named to this inaugural list have been making a significant impact with their businesses across the finance, creative and health-science industries.

New diagnostic device provides 20-minute blood test results

Four and a half years ago, the VitalOne was an ambitious idea. Today, the desktop computer-sized blood diagnostics device can run comprehensive tests on comparatively small blood samples — in 20 minutes.

Made by Vital Bio, a company founded at Velocity, the VitalOne was unveiled to the public and scientific community at a conference held by the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) last month, where Vital Bio also won the Disruptive Technology Award.
