Accelerator Centre helps high-tech firms soar higher, sooner

The mission at Waterloo’s Accelerator Centre is really quite simple: take in high-tech companies with the potential to become world class, nurture and mentor them, then watch them fly away.

“The businesses we accept into the Accelerator Program are already off the ground. What we do here is get them up to full throttle so they can soar into the clouds,” says Tim Ellis, the Accelerator Centre’s CEO.

Digital programs hold entrepreneurial appeal

Programs at the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus have a magical pull for budding entrepreneurs looking to create the businesses of the future.

Mohammed Khanani, a first-year Global Business and Digital Arts (GBDA) student, comes from a family of entrepreneurs in Pakistan. When searching for a program, he wanted a broad range of theoretical learning along with practical experience to prepare him for the demands of business.

As health and wellness becomes a greater concern for society, it's important that our younger generation takes note and changes their lifestyle. Lack of exercise and an unhealthy lifestyle are leading causes of disease and mortality in North America and initiatives to change these statistics are extremely necessary. Lack of motivation, boring routines and costs of a personal trainer can be obstacles to a healthy lifestyle.

The University of Waterloo has focused on entrepreneurship for many years. In conjunction with our co-op program, our students receive a rare experiential learning component. The university’s Enterprise Co-op program encourages students to take their learning even further. E Co-op gives Waterloo students the unique opportunity to navigate their way through starting a business while simultaneously earning a co-op credit.

Waterloo student startups impact the economy

The Waterloo students and young alumni who are currently running startups in the VeloCity Residence and VeloCity Garage have raised nearly $2.2 million in venture capital. Both entrepreneurship incubators, the Residence and Garage bring bright students with ideas together to create startups in Waterloo Region, which then create jobs for students and recent graduates.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011) - Less than a year after spinning off from the University of Waterloo's faculty of engineering, Innovative Processing Technologies (IPT) has been recognized by the Ontario government for its breakthrough Multiple Memory Material (MMM) technology, known for making smart materials smarter.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Friday, Dec. 2, 2011) - Some of the brightest minds in the faculty of engineering at the University of Waterloo will be showcasing their leading-edge research Wednesday, Dec. 7 on the main Waterloo campus.

More than 40 exhibits will be displayed at the WE Innovate event from 4 to 7 p.m. on the third floor of the Engineering 5 building. The public event will include demonstrations of:

• mechatronic devices used in planetary rovers and sports engineering

• adhesive technology that mimics a gecko’s footpad

WATERLOO, Ont. (Friday, Oct. 21, 2011) - Kevin O'Leary, a celebrity on CBC's Dragons' Den, will share key secrets on entrepreneurship when talking about his new book at an event hosted by the University of Waterloo bookstore on Monday, Oct. 24.

The book, entitled Cold Hard Truth, is both a personal story - success against the odds - and a practical business book. It features quizzes, questionnaires and lists designed to help average businesspersons hone their entrepreneurial and financial instincts.
