The research, recently published in Transportation Research Part C, used social media analytics, algorithms and computer simulation to match would-be carpoolers with people driving to work.

“Usually carpooling is about just matching people depending on geographical location and time of schedule,” said Bissan Ghaddar, professor of management engineering at Waterloo and author of the study. “We wanted to include the social aspect into the equation, because it’s always awkward when there is silence in the car, especially if it’s a long commute.”

Y Combinator (YC) has had a role in the growth of many billion-dollar companies. A number of companies that went through the University of Waterloo’s Velocity program have also gone through YC, including Thalmic Labs, Vidyard, Pebble, and Bufferbox.

Altman, also co-chairman of OpenAI, a non-profit company that conducts research on artificial intelligence, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree. He will address convocation at the Faculty of Engineering ceremony taking place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 17.

Despite signing a World Health Organization treaty on tobacco control over a decade ago, China is experiencing one million deaths per year from smoking, and more than half of the country’s 316 million smokers say they have no intention of quitting.

Details of China’s tobacco epidemic were presented in a report released today by the University of Waterloo’s International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project (ITC) and China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at a World No Tobacco Day event in Shanghai.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo compared data for nine months before and nine months after time-of-use rates were introduced in November 2011 by an unidentified distribution company with more than 20,000 household customers in southwestern Ontario.

Using advanced statistical tools to factor out the impact of weather differences, their analysis showed residential demand for electricity dropped just 2.6 per cent during on-peak periods and 2.4 per cent during mid-peak periods following the change.

Your sex life is only as old as you feel

by Media Relations

The closer you feel to your actual age, the less likely you are to be satisfied with your sex life, a University of Waterloo study has found.

The study looked at the attitudes of sex and aging of a group of 1170 adults from their mid-40s to their mid-70s over a 10-year period.

The group, which included people of diverse sexual orientation, reported that the closer people felt to their chronological age, the lower the quality of their sex life.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo combined motion sensors with software programs so that people recovering from hip and knee replacements could see how well they were doing their rehabilitative exercises.

Initial results show that the immediate visual feedback the new technology provides makes patients perform better.

Dams are major driver of global environmental change

by Media Relations

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Waterloo and the Université libre de Bruxelles,  appears in Nature Communications. If found that man-made dam reservoirs trap nearly one-fifth of the organic carbon moving from land to ocean via the world’s rivers.

While they can act as a significant source or sink for carbon dioxide, reservoirs are poorly represented in current climate change models.

Just as many teenagers use cannabis as smoke cigarettes

by Media Relations

The report, published yesterday as a supplement to Tobacco Use in Canada: Patterns and Trends, found that two per cent of Canadian students in Grades 7 to 12 – equivalent to more than 43,000 students – use marijuana every day. Daily smoking is similar at 1.8 per cent, according to the Canadian Student Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey.

Occasional cannabis use remains high among youth: one in five students reports ever trying it, and one in 10 reports use in the last 30 days.
