Each dollar spent on kids' nutrition can yield more than $100 later

by Christine Bezruki, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences

There are strong economic incentives for governments to invest in early childhood nutrition, reports a paper from the University of Waterloo and Cornell University.

Published for the Copenhagen Consensus Centre, the paper reveals that every dollar spent on nutrition during the first 1,000 days of a child’s life can provide a country up to $166 in future earnings.

An ultra-thin nanomaterial is at the heart of a major breakthrough by Waterloo scientists who are in a global race to invent a cheaper, lighter and more powerful rechargeable battery for electric vehicles.

Chemistry Professor Linda Nazar and her research team in the Faculty of Science at the University of Waterloo have announced a breakthrough in lithium-sulphur battery technology in a recent issue of Nature Communications.

The study, carried out by scientists at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, developed a novel approach that can accurately determine the pre-industrial baseline levels of metals in river sediment. This approach allows regulators to instantly determine if values from routine monitoring programs contain evidence of man-made pollution.
